Mirror polished turnstile housing is used when asthetics & anti corrosion application is basic requirement. Stainless steel for turnstiles are used in standard form & universally acceptable grades are SUS304 while as SUS316 is sometimes used for specific projects based on demand & requirements. The standards are in correlation with ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and the finishing of stainless steel is categorized in various types ensuring stainless steel longevity, maintenance, application and overall aesthetics. Since the steel plates are available with different standards, finishes and grades, the process for choosing the right steel for application directly depends on project requirements.
The widely used stainless steel finishing options are
#2B – Matte finish
#4 – Brushed finish
#8 – Mirror finish
#2B or matte finish is the mill finish, dull in appearance hence not aesthetic so can be used at places where appearance of surface is of no importance. Being dull in look the type is less expensive. The product cycles for such finishes are not hectic as it is produced by cold rolling hence less pitted surfaces, followed by softening & descaling using acid solutions with final pass on polished rolls to ensure smoothness
#4 or brushed finish varies from supplier to supplier or among the batches. This finish mainly depends on the type of abrasive belts used. Using this finish, very separate types of looks are created with patterns of parallel lines and grooves. Generally such finishes use grit between 120 & 320 based on application. The level of the grit impacts the surface roughness, which is typically measured in terms of micro-inches or micrometers, represented as Ra (roughness average). Simple is that higher grit means a finer & reflective look.
#8 or mirror finish , is a highly reflective mechanical polish, smooth finish with a scratch free appearance, achieved through proper & precise polishing of the stainless steel using finer abrasives & buffing rouges to remove all possible grit lines. The finish is highly resistant to the corrosion.
The roughness average measurement are mentioned below in table 1
General code | Finish type | Ra (Roughness average) Measurement |
#8 | Mirror Finish | 6 to 12 Ra |
#4 | Brushed Finish | 20 to 30 Ra |
#2B | Mattle Finish | 100+ Ra |
The mirror polising finish on turnstile surfaces is an option & can be order based on requirements, as it involves cost factor to some extent. Nundnet from Nundlab, Inc. USA have successfully delivered the mirror polished turnstile housing speed gates across the globe.
