OPTICAL TURNSTILE

Optical Turnstiles Optical Turnstile

Optical turnstiles are actually the standard mechanical turnstiles but with advanced features based on technological innovations and applications. Technically & practically optical turnstiles have same generic application to control exit and entry (Access Controls) using the readers but are incorporated with the advanced technical features like Infra Red (IR) detectors and lamps (LED’s) to control the movement of pedestrians by means of audible & visual interface, and all these are combined with the moving parts like motors, metal housing or casing with wings or arms made of tempered glass or Plexiglas or acrylic.

The building blocks of optical turnstiles are the same as mechanical turnstiles but sensors, indicators, and audio alarm generators are added as a feature.

From an engineering point of view, the Opto Couplers and Opto Isolators are used to form all possible combinations that are needed for safety and security reasons like Audible & Visual indications. It is with the proper application of infrared (IR) sensors, the audible and visual indications are created. The two IR sensors are optically connected, if any one crosses the lane, the beams are broken that helps to trigger the pulses necessary to  activate the alarm audible or visual as programmed & required.

There is no industry specific standard to manufacture the optical turnstiles but to make it extra modern & elegant some features are added to have precise & controlled access, offer a very high throughput means the rate of passage and speed or operation is high. But assuming these turnstiles as latest series of innovation, some features are made possible

  • High throughput without effecting the pedestrian passage time
  • Sensors to create Audio & Video alarms for maintaining high decorum of security
  • Anti tailgating sensors
  • Alert on power failure
  • Drop down arm on power failure
  • Generic form of integration with the access controls
  • Easy installation of access readers from RFID to biometric
  • Elegant look
  • LED Indicators with pictograph presentation

Now a day’s many Optical turnstiles are equipped with IP controllers
