Selection of turnstiles for a project or any use of great importance. Turnstiles as referred by different names in various regions like turnpike or baffle gate or automated gate in some countries hence should not be confused with the types. Turnstiles are a major part of people’s flow, so we need to be very careful in choosing the turnstile for specific applications. The housing, motor type, wings, direction and width of passage everything matters.
Selection of turnstiles depends on the various types of turnstile gates used widely in security industry are as
- Waist height turnstile
- Full height turnstile
- Optical turnstile
- Drop arm turnstile
- Sliding barrier
- Sweeping barrier
Selection of turnstiles directly impacts the security level from small to high risk.
Selection of Arms, The gates are with metal arms, tampered glass or PU acrylic wings and all these parts are moving proportional to the movement of the motor. Depending on the use, wear and tear we need to choose arms properly. The wings and swings are for optical turnstiles and are very delicate mostly used for indoor application while as metal arms for tripods of waist and full height hence used for outdoor application.
Housing, made of the stainless steel of SUS 304 or 316 or any other standard. All types of turnstiles cannot be used for outdoor application unless provided with the weatherproof casing or if not suitable IP rated or painted with suitable material to resist the environmental changes. In general IP54 is standard rating unless and otherwise specified.
Motor type, It can be a Servo motor for speed gates or Brushless motors for other types of turnstile gates. Better motor means better performance.
Direction indicators, These types of indicators are major identifiers in people flow that show the direction in which the user can go. The direction indicators are generally green & red with pictograph appearance.
Passage width, is usually 500~660 mm as per industry standard and 900~940 for DDA compliant paths
Roughly when calculating the number of turnstiles required for the building based on the 20% of the building population entering or exiting the building in a ten minute period.
Total Installation Capacity (per Minute) = (Building Population x 20%) / 10
